Second Trimester Update

Wow, where did second trimester go?! As I’m writing this, I am currently 30 weeks pregnant and feeling pretty good overall. I’ll be sharing all the ups and downs during my second trimester so keep on reading if you’re curious to know more! 🙂

Please keep in mind that this is my personal experience with my first pregnancy. What I’ve learned during my pregnancy is that you can read a lot of things online and learn from other people’s experience, but each person’s experience is truly unique and that is totally ok.

Ups

Feeling baby’s kicks: I felt the baby’s first movement at 21 weeks. At first, I thought I was gassy because that’s really how it feels haha. It feels like tiny air bubbles popping inside your stomach. It started happening more and after reading online, talking to friends and confirming with my doctor – it was definitely baby’s kicks. It’s such an amazing feeling and makes me more and more excited to be a mom. She’s very active when I’m winding down for the night. Her kicks started getting stronger towards the end of second trimester, so Ronson was even able to feel her. 🙂

Metabolism came back: Oh man I’m so happy my metabolism came back.  It was really hard to eat (and digest) in my first trimester, not because of morning sickness, but mainly due to the hormones. In the beginning, progesterone will relax muscles and slow digestion so I had to adjust my portions to eat smaller, snack-sized meals. Now I actually get hungry and am able to eat much more without feeling like my stomach is going to pop haha.

More energy: I definitely started feeling more like myself during second trimester. Energy came back. No more nausea. My workout routine was consistent. The gym opened up, so Ronson checked it out first to see which time slots had the least amount of people. I went to the gym 4-5 times a week first thing in the morning and was feeling great. I adjusted my workouts to lower weight, high rep and focused on muscle-mind connection.

Downs

Constipation: How come no one warned me about constipation?! This is definitely the only complaint I have about pregnancy so far. When I take a step back and look at it, it probably didn’t last that long, but it felt like forever because it was so uncomfortable. I made sure I was drinking a lot of water (already aiming for a gallon/day) and eating lots of fiber. When that wasn’t helping, I looked into natural solutions like eating 2-3 apricots a day. I don’t think that helped as much as I hoped, but Metamucil surely did haha. On the bright side, I’m happy to say that the constipation was gone in my third trimester.

 Stomach tightening: I noticed after sitting down for a long period of time, my stomach will tighten up. It’s uncomfortable because it feels like my stomach will pop. I think this is Braxton Hicks because it comes and goes and whenever I change positions, there is some relief. It’s kind of unavoidable because I do have a desk job and especially since we’re WFH/SIP, there’s not a lot of walking going on between the day. I had to make sure I was taking breaks in between work and walking around a few times around the house, up/down the stairs and elevating my feet during lunch.

Overall, even though there have been some downs to pregnancy, I am loving being pregnant! I always imaged pregnancy would be more unbearable or uncomfortable so I have nothing to complain about and I’m so grateful for this experience.
